New to 4-H: What to expect

Every 4-H program runs a little bit differently, ours is no different. On a normal year; enrollments start in September, club meetings begin in October, and projects will begin at any time after October 1st. Clubs meet once a month thru June, on their designated day and time. Most animal projects do not begin until after the first of the year.

Our Membership:

Primary aged members, we call Mini Members, are ages 5-8 as of December 31st of the program year. Primary members are not required to attend club meetings, but are always invited to do so. Most clubs will have special activities just for mini members, or have special meetings with a mini member focus. Mini members cannot show market animals at the livestock show, but can still participate with certain showmanship projects. Poultry, rabbits, and pygmy goats are the 3 mini member animal projects. Members will keep these animals year round. We also offer other projects specifically designed for mini members, or projects that are open to all ages of membership.

Regular members, ages 9-18 as of December 31st of the program year. Regular members should attend monthly meetings, and if you are showing a market animal are required to attend at least 60% of club meetings. Regular members also should be keeping a Record Book for the project they participate in, and taking part in community service activities offered by their club.

All of our projects and clubs will contact you through email. It is very important that you check your email regularly, the email address that you used as your family email when enrolling. Also, many projects will ask for members to RSVP yes or no to the project, please take the time to do this. A lot of planning goes into each project, and it is always nice to know who is going to be there and who cannot attend. Remember all of our leaders are volunteers, we are very fortunate they are willing to donate their time.

Regular members showing animals at the Tri-County Fair's Junior Livestock Show & Auction have a few requirements for show eligibility. Members must be enrolled in the 4-H program by December 15th, Youth must attend at least 60% of club meetings, and attend at least 60% of animal project meetings. This is all verified by leaders, if you are on the bubble of not attending enough meetings, talk to your leaders immediately, please don't wait until the last minute. Youth must also complete a 4-H Record Book, forms are available at the 4-H office, the local 4-H website, and the 4-H State website. Record book workshops are held each spring and are located on our local 4-H YouTube Channel. Also, attendance of our Livestock Field Day, which is a livestock education day put on by our local FFA programs. The event is usually held at the end of April or early May, and rotates between Lone Pine and Bishop FFA farms. And the last requirement is participation in the YQCA training, online or in person trainings at the Livestock Field Day.

If you have questions, there are a few ways to get answers. The 4-H office (officially called the UC Cooperative Extension Office) call us at 760-873-7854, or email Callie Peek, 4-H Program Representative, or Melissa Yeager, UCCE Office Manager. Your club leader, their information will come to you in an email at the beginning of the program year. The local 4-H website, it is not the best website, but we try our best to keep important information updated, and we are always working on improvements. And now most recently we have created a blog, where we will update with newsletters articles and results from 4-H events.

We look forward to seeing you at future 4-H events.
