A Gardening Project for the Bored Gardener

Several years ago, I tried growing carrots in my garden, and found them to be very tasty, and rewarding to grow in the home garden. While a bag of carrots at the grocery store is relatively cheap, the flavor of home grown just cannot be beat. You can also keep them in the ground in our coastal area for several months. Fall rains will wash dirt away from the mature root, and exposes the top shoulder of the carrot. It will turn slightly green, but is not toxic.

Direct sowing works best, and you can buy pelleted seeds for easy sowing. The small unpelleted seeds make it hard to space them just right, and even with a little seeder tool below, masses of seeds can fall out.

I have a thought for you, that I found out will work if you have some time. Lockdowns of Covid-19 make that possible

I want my seeds just right, evenly spaced if possible, and ready to grow. A normal carrot grows to 1 to 1 1/2 in diameter. They have to be thinned. I had an idea; what if I don't want to thin? Can I make my own seed tape out of toilet paper?

The plan is below.  I rolled out a length of two ply toilet paper and peeled open the 2 layers. You can use organic TP if you wish. The first year I used a tiny dab of glue every 2 inches, alternated on the bottom side.

The second year I used pureed oatmeal. I wanted something more organic. The idea is to get the seed to stick to something. Carefully lay the second TP layer back on top, as if you are making a seed and TP sandwich. Now you made your own seed tape!
