California Weed Science Society honors top students at symposium

In January, the California Weed Science Society held its annual symposium in beautiful Santa Barbara. This year's conference theme was California Weed Science: From Restoration to Recreation.  The program was chuck full of content showcasing the latest research in weed management in many of California's abundant cropping systems as well as aquatics, forestry, range, and natural areas.

This year's student competition featured seven students representing  University of California, Davis and  California State University, Fresno. In the poster competition, 1st Place went to Katie Driver from U.C. Davis for her poster titled “Bearded Sprangletop (Leptochloa fusca spp. fasicularis) adaptation to flooding in California Rice”.  2nd Place went to HannahJoy Kennedy also from U.C. Davis for her work on “Weed vs. Crop Differentiation Using Crop Marking Systems”.  3rd Place went to C.S.U. Fresno student Priyanka Chaudhari for her work titled “The genetic basis of glyphosate resistance in the Central Valley agricultural weed hairy fleabane (Erigeron bonariensis L.)”.

In the paper/oral competition, 1st Place went to Katie Driver from U.C. Davis for her presentation titled “Survey of Bearded Sprangletop Response to Clomazone in California Rice”.  2nd Place went to Alex Ceseski from U.C. Davis for his presentation titled “Smallflower Umbrella Sedge Cross-Resistance to ALS Inhibitors in the California Rice-Growing Region”.  3rd Place was given to two deserving students; HannahJoy Kennedy of U.C. Davis for her work titled “Weed vs. Crop Differentiation Using Crop Marking Systems” and Diana Camarena of C.S.U. Fresno for her presentation “Germination Rate and Glyphosate Resistance of Hairy Fleabane (Erigeron bonariensis)”.  The society would like to thank all the students for participating in this year's conference and we look forward to seeing everyone in 2019 in Sacramento.
