This week on In the Garden with UC Master Gardeners, the subject is Creating a Defensible Fire Space. Time to get a buffer around your vulnerable, exposed property.

You don't have to be right on the interface of urban/open space to be impacted because embers can travel a mile or more away from an active fire situation.
Those embers can smolder in an attic for hours and when you think you are safe, you find out that you are not! Be careful of drought-tolerant but highly flammable plantings. Mexican Feather Grass plantings and old palm fronds are prevalent in So Cal right now.
On this show, UC Master Gardener and KUCI staff host David Letourneau speaks with Teri Merritt, Fire Prevention Specialist / Wildland Pre-Fire Management with the Orange County Fire Authority and Capt. Larry Kurtz. Together, they will help you prepare and protect yourself and your home from wildfires.
