The degree of filtration is expressed as mesh size or equivalent mesh size. The mesh size is the number of openings per inch. For example, a 200-mesh filter has 200 openings per inch.

The required degree of filtration is frequently specified by the emission device manufacturer.  Follow these recommendations rather than simply using past experience or neighbor's recommendations.

Selection of the type of filtration should be based on the water source and the clogging hazard.  For information on which filter to use, click here.
