Tree #1: Canary Island Date Palm

Phoenix canariensis (FEE-nicks  kan-air-ee-EN-sis)

  • AKA Pineapple Palm (when trimmed the upper trunk or ‘nut’ looks like a pineapple)
  • Located at four corners of park as ‘entry trees’
  • Native to Canary Islands which are a part of Spain; brought to this continent by the Spanish missionaries
  • Called a ‘feather palm’ due to shape of leaves
  • Average height 60 feet with a 50 feet spread of canopy
  • Fronds are very sharp and pose a danger when falling
  • 3/4" fruit or drupe (like a plum or apricot); edible but not much meat
