About the Event
Join Maxwell Norton, UCANR Cooperative Extension Farm Advisor Emeritus, Fruit Trees and Grapes for this free Community Education Workshop on Pruning Backyard Fruit Trees.
There will be a morning session (10 am -12 noon) in the UCCE Classroom at 2145 Wardrobe Ave, Merced.
- What you will learn:
- How to prune young fruit trees
- Two basic pruning cuts: Thinning and Heading
- About the branch collar
- Where to cut the new bare root fruit tree
- When and why use a three phase cut
- Bring your own brown bag lunch.
The afternoon session (1:30 -3:30 pm) will be held outdoors at the UC Merced Student Orchard. Directions will be provided at the morning session. Wear warm clothing and appropriate footwear to walk in fields.
- What you will learn:
- Hands-on orchard pruning demonstration
- Tree planting demonstration and tips.
- Please wear boots, gloves, and protective eyewear.
- If you have them, bring your loppers and pruning shears.
