Primary Member Projects

Kids aged 5 to 8 can join 4-H as Primary Members, also known as “Cloverbuds.”
Primary Member projects and activities are based on research on positive youth development. Positive youth development means helping you grow by giving you chances to learn, make choices, and build skills.
Primary Member Projects:
- Let you practice skills with open-ended tasks.
- Focus on the process rather than the result.
- Use your experience to guide you to explore instead of written or spoken lessons.
- Work and learn together instead of competing.
What kind of projects are there for Primary Members?
Primary Members can do almost ALL 4-H projects! 4-H activities are adapted for Primary Members to focus on the process and working together. Primary members are only restricted from projects such as livestock, large animals and shooting sports for safety reasons.
Please see our Primary Member Project Resource page on the California 4-H Resource Center for links to curriculum and other resources. If you are new to 4-H, we recommend you start with Beginning 4-H for Primary Members. This project lets you sample different projects available in 4-H while you also learn more about 4-H.
