New California fire maps have put nearly 4 million Californians in hazardous zones. What does that mean for the people who live there and for those adjacent to them? In this presentation we will discuss fire defensive landscaping, soil and mulch as well plant choices to best protect your home from fires. Included will be an understanding of defensible spaces, how to protect your home, firewise plant selection, and how to protect your neighborhood.
UC Master Gardener Presenter Carmen Mahood: Carmen became a Master Gardener in 2025. She maintains a large garden surrounding her home in Belmont. She had a long career in education and was an art guide at the San Francisco Museums of Fine Art for over a decade. Her particular gardening interests are oak trees, native plants, and landscaping.
